Without really knowing how to transcode oodles of GoPro footage, I just stuck it in FCP X and hit "Optimize". A couple of hours later I had all that MP4 footage in ProRes ready to Edit.  I can say this at least, FCP X is really, really, really good at transcoding footage in the backgroud.  Whistle while you work too...
